Gary began taking pictures in college. After graduation, a twist of fate led Gary to the studio of renowned photographer Galen Rowell, where he managed the 400,000+ image library and Stock Department of Mountain Light Photography. He left to pursue his own photography following the birth of his first child.

Since then, his client and publication credits include the National Geographic Society, New York TimesForbes,TIME, The National Park Service, Victoria’s Secret, The North Face, Sunset, L.L. Bean, Subaru, and The Nature Conservancy. He has seven published books to his credit, including the award-winning The California Coast and his most recent book Photographing California; Vol. 1 – North, which won the highly distinguished Benjamin Franklin Gold Medal Award as Best Regional Title by the Independent Book Publishers Association (IBPA). Most recently, Gary was honored when the United State Postal Service released a nearly unprecedented seven of his images as USPS ‘Forever’ postage stamps.

Gary’s prints and murals are included in private and corporate collections, including hotels, hospitals, the Department of the Interior, and U.S. State Department. Gary also conducts highly praised shows and workshops for groups like R.E.I., The Sierra Club, The Photographic Society of America, etc., along with other services including consulting, photo editing, presentations, custom private and group photo workshops.
